Kids and Teens Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases found in kids and teens, also known as communicable diseases, contagious diseases or transmissible diseases, are comprised of clinically evident illnesses resulting from the infection, presence and growth of pathogenic biological agents in an individual host organism.

There is always a chance your kids and teens will contract an infectious disease at any point in their life. Most of these infectious diseases can be prevented through the use of vaccines and immunizations. There are many different infectious diseases, but we’ll give you an overview of the most common ones.

Common Infectious Diseases in Kids and Teens

  • Tuberculosis – known as “TB”  for short, this infectious disease affects mainly the lungs. It is very contagious and can spread easily by coming into contact with an infected person who coughs or sneezes.
  • Malaria – a rare occurrence in the US, malaria is an illness that comes from infected mosquitoes. The disease can also spread by infected blood.
  • Measles – a viral infectious disease, measles is almost always prevented through a vaccine received as a child.
  • Tetanus – a bacterial infectious disease that targets a child’s nervous system. There is no known cure for this disease, but a vaccine does exist in order to prevent it.
  • Syphilis – this is actually a sexually transmitted bacterial disease but it can spread to pregnant women’s child. There is no vaccine for this infectious disease.
  • Hand, foot, and mouth disease – HFMD for short, this is a common infectious illness resulting in skin rashes on the hands and feet, as well mouth sores.
  • Chickenpox – mainly affecting children, this infectious disease can be successfully prevented by vaccine usage.

We have locations throughout the San Fernando Valley including Encino, Northridge, Van Nuys, Mission Hills, Pacoima, and even Pasadena for vaccinations among other kids and teen pediatric services. Vaccines do not only have to take place as an infant. You can become vaccinated even as a teen. It’s always encouraged to receive vaccination, especially when traveling.
